Steps to Travel Safely in Today’s World

Travel and photography are two of my top priorities. As I mentioned last week, I am planning the next two years of travel. I do have concerns about potential global conflict in some regions, but I am planning anyway. In my years of personal travel, there has only been one time I felt unsafe and wanted to return to the ship. It was a Caribbean Island and there were protests that day. There was one time I wasn’t aware I was in a danger zone. I was contacted by corporate security while on travel in Japan. There were protests around Narita Airport and they wanted to know my whereabouts. I told them I was working from the sales office in Tokyo, I was given steps to take when I was leaving the country.

I still have plans to travel to some locations my family views as too dicey, but I will review the political situation in the area, watch US State Department alerts and make my decisions closer to the trip.

Travel offers a wonderful escape, providing opportunities to explore new places, meet different people, and immerse yourself in diverse cultures. Traveling abroad can be an enriching and empowering experience, especially for women. (I’ve included the packing checklist for your records). To ensure a safe and smooth journey, here are some essential travel tips:

1. Research Your Destination

Before you travel, learn about your destination’s culture, laws, and customs. Respect local traditions and dress codes to avoid unwanted attention. Check for travel advisories from your government and plan accordingly.

2. Stay Connected

Keep your family and friends updated with your travel itinerary. Carry a local SIM card or an international roaming plan for emergency communication. Apps like WhatsApp, Google Maps, and local transport apps can enhance your travel experience. I always activate my phone carrier for international calls and text for $10 a day.

3. Secure Your Documents

Always have digital and physical copies of important documents such as your passport, visa, travel insurance, and emergency contacts. Store digital copies in a secure cloud service or an email account. I always have an emergency contact sheet with and copies of my prescriptions with me. I leave them in the hotel room safe.

4. Know the Location of Your Embassy

Locating your embassy or consulate in the destination country is crucial. They can assist in emergencies, provide resources, and help in unforeseen legal matters. Visit the website of your country’s foreign affairs department for addresses and contact details.

5. Manage Money Wisely

Notify your bank and credit card company of your travel plans to avoid any blocks on your debit or credit cards. Explore options for travel-friendly bank cards to minimize foreign transaction fees. Always have some local currency and keep your money in multiple places to avoid being left without cash.

6. Prioritize Health

Pack a basic first aid kit with prescriptions, pain relievers, and any specific medication you require. Understand the healthcare system of the destination and know where the nearest hospital or clinic is located. Always have travel insurance that covers health issues abroad.

7. Stay in Safe Accommodations

Book accommodations with good reviews, especially regarding safety and location. Use trusted platforms and apps for booking. Always lock your room and use a safety deposit box if available.

8. Blend In

Try to blend in as much as possible to avoid standing out as a tourist, which can make you a target for scams or theft. Learn a few phrases of the local language, not only as a sign of respect but also to navigate basic interactions more smoothly.

9. Trust Your Instincts

Always trust your instincts. If a situation or a person doesn’t feel right, leave immediately. Have a plan for quickly getting to safety if needed.

10. What to Do If Your Passport is Lost

  • Report Immediately: Notify the local police and obtain a police report.
  • Contact Your Embassy: Visit your nearest embassy or consulate. They can assist you in obtaining a temporary passport or travel document.
  • Provide Identification: Have copies of your passport and other ID documents handy, as these will help expedite the process.
  • Stay Informed: Know the procedure for replacing your passport from your country’s governmental travel site.

Traveling abroad as a woman can be a fantastic experience with proper preparation and precautions. By following these tips, you can navigate foreign environments safely and confidently. Enjoy your travels, explore new cultures, and create memorable experiences with peace of mind.
