Artist Statement
I’m Mary Harvey Gurley, a photographer, writer and artist based in Memphis.
Throughout my career in corporate public relations, painting, and photography have been my creative outlets—a space where I could channel my creativity and find peace away from work demands.
Much of my art and photography focus on “things that fly.” My art focuses on angels, and my photography captures birds, butterflies, and the occasional aircraft. This passion reflects my deep appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and the beauty inherent in flora, fauna, and all of God’s creation.
Despite having traveled the world with my camera, I’ve found that some of my best bird photography comes from a much closer place: outside my breakfast room window. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most captivating subjects are right before us, waiting to be seen in a new light. I hope my images and paintings bring a certain level of whimsy and joy to everyone who sees them.
This portfolio is more than just a collection of my work; it’s a glimpse into my journey. It reflects my commitment to conservation, fascination with flight, and love for the natural world. I hope art inspires others to look closer at the beauty around us and to engage more deeply with our environment. I hope my images and paintings bring a certain level of whimsy and joy to everyone who sees them.
This statement aims to share my journey and perspective in a straightforward, authentic manner, highlighting my dedication to my subjects and the world around us.
