Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 medium sweet onion finely chopped (about 3/4 cup)
- 1 medium green pepper finely chopped (about ¾ cup)
- 4 cloves cloves garlic minced
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 can tomato paste 6 oz.
- 1 can diced tomatoes 28 oz.
- 1 can tomato sauce (a jar of spaghetti sauce is a great alternative)
- 1 pkg spaghetti cooked according to package instructions and kept warm to serve
Instructions
- Brown meat: Add the beef, sausage, peppers, and onions to a Dutch over medium-high heat.Cook, breaking up the beef into small pieces until the meat is browned and the onions and peppers are tender for about 6 minutes.Drain off any grease, if necessary. Stir in the garlic, oregano,and basil, and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.Season with salt and pepper.
- Add tomatoes: Stir in the tomato paste until well incorporated.Add the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce.Bring to a low boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer the sauce forat least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.Taste the sauce and add any additional seasoning you might like.
