Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 medium sweet onion finely chopped (about 3/4 cup)
  • 1 medium green pepper finely chopped (about ¾ cup)
  • 4 cloves cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 can tomato paste 6 oz.
  • 1 can diced tomatoes 28 oz.
  • 1 can tomato sauce (a jar of spaghetti sauce is a great alternative)
  • 1 pkg spaghetti cooked according to package instructions and kept warm to serve

Instructions

  • Brown meat: 
    Add the beef, sausage, peppers, and onions to a Dutch over medium-high heat.
    Cook, breaking up the beef into small pieces until the meat is browned and the onions and peppers are tender for about 6 minutes.
    Drain off any grease, if necessary. Stir in the garlic, oregano,and basil, and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
    Season with salt and pepper.
  • Add tomatoes: 
    Stir in the tomato paste until well incorporated.
    Add the diced tomatoes and tomato sauce.
    Bring to a low boil, then reduce to a simmer. Simmer the sauce forat least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
    Taste the sauce and add any additional seasoning you might like.
