My Journey of Solo Travel

As I reflect on my extensive travels, solo and with colleagues, I’m reminded of the richness that stepping out into the world has brought into my life. My journey, particularly as a woman over 55, has been about more than just seeing different places; it’s been a voyage of self-discovery and adventure, proving that age is merely a number when it comes to exploring the world.

Finding New Paths: From Corporate Life to Travel Writing and Photography

After leaving a fulfilling career, I embarked on a new adventure as a travel writer and photographer, pursuing a master’s in spirituality. This path led me to solo adventures, like my inspiring trip to an art school in Ireland, where I found myself not just traversing the rolling hills of Mulranney but also rediscovering my life’s direction.

The COVID-19 pandemic paused my travels but didn’t dampen my spirit. My last trip before lockdown was a soul-stirring visit to the Norfolk Beach area in Virginia, where I captured the beauty of the Chincoteague ponies and enriched my mind at the Edgar Cayce Center.

The Joys and Challenges of Group Travel

Traveling with friends can be delightful but challenging, as I discovered on a three-week Mediterranean voyage. While it began with shared excitement, we soon realized our interests diverged – my passion for photography wasn’t shared by my travel companion. It’s a lesson in flexibility and understanding, leading to a reworked itinerary that ensured we both enjoyed our journey.

Embracing Solo Travel: A Gateway to Independence and Confidence

Solo travel, especially for women over 55, is an escape and a powerful way to reclaim independence and build confidence. I’ve rediscovered my inner strength and resilience by navigating through unfamiliar streets, interacting with locals, and making spontaneous decisions.

Physical and Mental Well-being Through Travel

I always prioritize getting in shape before embarking on a significant journey. Traveling encourages physical activity, whether walking through historic cities, hiking in nature, or exploring a new place. This active lifestyle, combined with the mental health benefits of new experiences and social connections, significantly enhances well-being, especially for those in the 55+ category.

Cultural Enrichment and Lifelong Learning

Each destination is an opportunity for cultural enrichment and education. From learning local languages to understanding diverse traditions, travel has broadened my perspectives and deepened my appreciation of the world’s rich tapestry.

Building Lasting Connections

Some of the most memorable aspects of my travels are the people I’ve met along the way. These connections have enriched my journeys and led to enduring friendships that transcend geographical boundaries.

The Road Ahead: Continuing the Adventure

With a bucket list, my goal is to continue traveling extensively, capturing the beauty of wildlife and birds through my lens. Travel, for me, is a continuous journey of growth, learning, and enjoyment – a sentiment I believe many women over 55 can resonate with.
