When the Words Don’t Come Easily
It’s Sunday morning, and here I am writing my weekly article. I’ve already written five versions of this newsletter this week. None felt right. I need to submit it today so it’s ready for Tuesday morning. Before I got out of bed, I prayed: “Show me what you need to hear this week.” And this is what came.
The Shift From Practical Topics to Heart Messages
Almost two years ago, I had big plans to write about health, finances, and all things life after 50. Those topics fell flat, and you didn’t like them. But what resonated with you wasn’t the practical topics—it was the heart stuff—the messages about life, resilience, and aging. I never planned to write those things. I’m a journalist, and I write fact-based articles. I never imagined you’d look forward to Tuesday mornings for a few words of inspiration from me. (Really, me?) Yet here we are.
Listening for What’s on People’s Hearts
People often ask how I pick my topics. Here’s the truth: I look for the life pain points that affect me and my friends. If it’s something I’m wrestling with, chances are you are too.
Building a Vision Board With Faith at the Center
Every January, I build a vision board. It’s a mix of images and words—travel, relationships, health, purpose, and spirituality. In the center is a large single circle that represents the God of my understanding. (Yes, very AA) Around it, I place what I hope to create. But here’s the key: I surrender the outcome to God and the universe. That’s hard for a type A, control freak, but it works.
How the Unexpected Became My Calling
Five years ago, I wanted to be a travel photographer and counselor. Never did I dream of writing weekly about issues in the lives of aging women. But regardless of my doubt, this unexpected thing, I moved forward, trusting I was equipped with all I needed. It was never my goal, but it is the outcome of surrendering to something other than what I thought I wanted.
When Doubt Sets In
How many times have we backed away from something because we thought we weren’t qualified? I almost didn’t hit “send” on my first newsletter because I was sure no one would read it. Yet every time you connected with a message, I learned something important: apparently, I am equipped to do this work.
You Are Already Equipped for the Work That’s Yours
What do you want to do and be? When something feels too big, remember: you’re not the source. If it’s meant for you, you’ll be given what you need to become who you need to be. The strength. The wisdom. The confidence.
You are already equipped for the good work that’s yours to do. Please email me about what you’ve dreamed about doing and why you don’t feel equipped.
